INVERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY

The Division of Invertebrate Zoology encompasses the Departments of Invertebrate Zoology and Entomology.

Department of Invertebrate Zoology
Scientists in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology study groups of animals which not only contribute immensely to the earth's biodiversity, but which have left a fossil record that provides a remarkable history of life on the this planet. Fieldwork and laboratory studies, supported by extensive collections, document the complexity and range of invertebrate life, from marine arthropods of 400 million years ago to snails now living off the coast of California.  Continue to department site >

Department of Entomology
The Department of Entomology houses more than 17 million examples of living and extinct arthropods (insects, spiders, centipedes, scorpions, etc.). In addition to maintaining these vast collections, Museum entomologists conduct research throughout the world to document this most diverse and successful group of higher land-dwelling organisms, which make up more terrestrial biomass and greater numbers of species than any other kind of animal.  Continue to department site >
